Minor Arcana

Group exhibition

Sheet Cake Gallery is pleased to announce the second group exhibition, Minor Arcana, inviting artists to reimagine each card of the Tarot. This iteration focuses on the four suits of Cups, Pentacles, Swords and Wands. Opening on Saturday, May 9 from 5 - 7:30 PM and on view through June 27, 2026, this exhibition features new work by:

David Onri Anderson (Nashville, TN), Ariel Wolfe Baldwin (Chicago, IL), Leanna Carey (Memphis, TN), Truett Dietz (Atlanta, GA), Melissa Dunn (Memphis, TN), Alexandra Eastburn (Memphis, TN), Ahmad George (Chicago, IL), Johnny Floyd (Atlanta, GA), Roscoe Hall (Birmingham, AL), Stephanie Howard (Greenville, SC), Rahn Marion (Memphis, TN), Joel Parsons (Memphis, TN), Amy Pleasant (Birmingham, AL), John Shorb (Memphis, TN/Brooklyn, NY), Sergio Suarez (Atlanta, GA), Clare Torina (Brooklyn, NY), Savithri Velaga (San Francisco, CA), Emily Weiner (Nashville, TN), and Claire Downes Whitehurst (New Orleans, LA)

The 19 participating artists in Minor Arcana join a centuries-long tradition of recreating the imagery and symbolism of the Tarot in their own unique ways, imbuing the cards with visual markers of the cultural, historical, and political undercurrents of their respective times. This exhibition follows the first installment in the series, which focused on the Major Arcana - charting the allegorical arc of the Fool’s journey toward enlightenment and self-discovery through pivotal life events and trials.

In contrast, the 56 cards of the Minor Arcana offer a more intimate and nuanced reflection of daily experience and personal narrative. Organized into four suits, each aligned with a natural element, these cards map the emotional, material, intellectual, and creative dimensions of human life. Cups, associated with water, explore emotion and relationships; Pentacles, aligned with earth, address labor, materiality, and exchange; Swords, tied to air, engage thought, perception, and action; and Wands, connected to fire, evoke desire, energy, and manifestation.

The works in this exhibition span a range of media, including collage, drawing, stained glass, and painting, underscoring the diversity of approaches through which these enduring archetypes continue to be reimagined.
