Sheet Cake Gallery is pleased to announce two new solo exhibitions, I Wanna Heart It! with new works by Roscoe Hall (Birmingham, AL), and Keep Safe with new work by Stephanie Howard (Greenville, SC). An opening reception for both exhibitions will be held on Saturday, August 15 from 5 - 7:30 PM and be on view through July 19, 2026. 

Roscoe Hall is a painter and chef whose work is built through accumulation and intuition, allowing material, color, and gesture to carry memory. Hall works with soil, spices, and burlap, collapsing the boundaries between abstraction and figuration, object and ritual. In his paintings, he interrogates and reframes cultural narratives through an African American lens, pulling from Southern folklore, punk music, and a deep sense of place. 

For his first solo exhibition at Sheet Cake, Hall embraced the physicality of mark-making and material, allowing each painting to develop its own rhythm. Incorporating burned wood, denim, and organic pigments derived from peanuts and yams, these new works are layered yet open, creating spaces where the familiar exists between memory and possibility. Prioritizing visual language over narrative, Hall considers how painting can both honor the Southern artists who have profoundly shaped his practice, including Yvonne Wells' quilts and Mose Tolliver's paintings, while forging a contemporary vernacular uniquely his own. 

Stephanie Howard’s obsessive drawing practice has long served as a space for introspection and divination. Her works are quiet meditations on the human experience and our desire to suspend time or preserve what we know to be fleeting. Inspired by self-taught artists and rich traditions of Southern storytelling, Howard’s highly detailed pen on paper works often feature women and text that tease an open-ended narrative, always leaving room for the viewer to fill in the story. 

Keep Safe explores the preservation of sacred objects, thoughts, and memories. Created for her second exhibition at Sheet Cake, these new mixed-media works position drawing as a protective ritual, mapping the worry of divining a path forward. Intricate, quilt-like geometric borders frame vintage imagery and handwritten text, transforming each composition into a contemporary medicine box for the soul. Through repetition, symmetry, and archival fragments, Howard's drawings reflect our impulse to seek comfort in objects and rituals when faced with the unknown, and the ways those personal talismans become imbued with meaning, memory, and quiet power.
