About the Artist

Stephanie Howard was born in the Appalachian region of South Carolina and still resides in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Howard received her BFA in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design, and later her Masters of Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina. Her work has been exhibited widely in the Southeastern United States. Howard is inspired and influenced by outsider and folk art, vintage photography and illustration, as well as embroidery and quilting. When working, she often thinks of her materials as fabric and thread instead of pen and paper.

Artist Statement

Ultimately, my art is a celebration of the human experience in all its complexity. It is a testament to the power of creativity to transcend the boundaries of time and space, offering comfort and understanding in the face of life's greatest mysteries. Through drawing, I confront the obsessive thoughts related to pain, fear, joy, beauty, and existence, embracing the passage of time as an integral part of what it means to be alive.

In my fine line ink work, I embark on a journey of introspection and exploration, delving into the intricate tapestry of time and its profound impact on our lives. I am fascinated with the elusive nature of time and our ever-evolving relationship with it. Through the delicate interplay of line and form, I strive to evoke a sense of nostalgia and contemplation, inviting viewers to reflect on their own relationship with time and the fleeting moments that define our existence.

The repetitive nature of compulsive drawing becomes a form of meditation on vulnerability, transforming fear into acceptance and embracing the fleeting beauty of existence. By immersing myself in the process of creation, I find refuge from the existential dread that often accompanies thoughts of impermanence. I can also create and channel protection and power. Through the act of drawing, I reclaim a sense of agency and control, transforming my anxieties into a source of creative energy and resilience.
