About the Artist
Leanna Hicks Carey (b. 1990, Baton Rouge, LA) has shown regionally and internationally since the aughts. Carey is primarily an oil painter and will occasionally execute small interior murals. She moved from South Louisiana to Memphis TN in 2008, which marked the beginning of her artistic career. She briefly relocated to Detroit MI in 2018 to work along side the bourgeoning arts scene, and returned to Memphis in 2020. Her paintings are driven by a spiritual and mercurial narrative. This visual "storytelling" is intrinsically tied to her southern upbringing and folklore. Holding a secret while skillfully doling out her missteps and wisdom in layers upon layers of visual revelations. Carey's color choices air on the side of iridescence, contributing to the movement, gravity, and vitality of her creative voice. Notable achievements are: Representation by Rose Gallery at the Miami Art fair (2014), participation in a group exhibition, REFERENCE, alongside other artist such as Elger Esser and William Eggleston (2015), honorable mentions of her book of illustrations, “Lucinda in the Apex” in Vogue (2016).
